Creative Botanical Embroidery Vegetables by Konekono Kitsune

Botanical Embroidery

As an artist, I find this kind of embroidery little challenging because it combines the delicate intricacy of embroidery with the unique and varied textures found in plants. Each stitch mimics the fine veins of leaves, the gentle curve of petals, or the rugged surface of bark. Using just thread and needle, you can capture the essence of nature’s designs, whether it’s a simple daisy or a complex fern frond. If you are an avid nature lover, this art would be pretty amazing to try out.

What I love most about botanical embroidery is how meditative it feels. Recreating the natural world stitch by stitch allows me to connect deeply with nature. It’s not just an art form, but also a way of slowing down and appreciating the details that often go unnoticed in our busy lives. Plus, it offers endless creative possibilities—you can experiment with color, texture, and form to make each piece unique. I came across a very talented artist KoneKono who crafts beautiful vegetables and flowers using threads.

Stepping into Konekono Kitsune’s studio in Tokyo, you might think you’ve wandered into a farmer’s market. The space is filled with what look like fresh vegetables, but these are actually made from thread. Kitsune uses layers upon layers of thread, occasionally starting with a felt base, to craft realistic versions of curly kale, collard greens, and other veggies. The details are impressive. Fluffy green threads mimic the florets of broccoli. A bean pod is carefully stitched to show its soft, downy inside. Even the ridges on a sweet potato are captured perfectly with tight, precise stitches.

Konekono Kitsune mentions that their grandmother used to embroider often, but they only started experimenting with the medium a few years ago. “I’m not a farmer, and I’m not particularly good at cooking. I just happened to start embroidering vegetables and found my calling. Embroidery threads are fantastic for capturing the textures of vegetable fibers,” they explain.

This style of botanical embroidery is all about bringing the natural world into the realm of art, showcasing the beauty and detail of plants through intricate stitching. Kitsune’s work is a wonderful example of how embroidery can capture the essence of nature in a unique and charming way.
