Embroidery Stitches and Design patterns For Beginners

Embroidery is a beautiful craft which includes different types of stitches. If you are a beginner looking for a tutorial on how to start embroidery with basic stitches, this one may be for you. Here I have included a number of embroidery stitches which is suitable for variety of design patterns.

There are different types of stitches including:

  • Running stitch
  • Chain stitch
  • Stem stitch
  • Feather stitch
  • Satin stitch
  • Cross stitch
  • Fly stitch

To start with, make sure you have all the necessary materials (thread, needle, cloth and scissors) for embroidery. As a beginner, you may start with the basic stitches only. It includes running stitch, chain stitch etc. Here you can see how to use the thread and needle for each type of stitch.

Threaded running stitch and Herringbone stitch can be practiced after doing the basic ones.

After you try chain stitch, you may experiment with the cable chain stitch (shown below). It is actually a linked chain stitch in a row or a zig-zag pattern. You may use this type of stitch as a border design. Here is  an example of how you can create an embroidery design with some basic stitches. You can also make amazing designs with patience and time. Try some floral designs and stems. You can make simple lines with running stitch and chain stitch. Practice on a piece of cloth several times until you are confident with each stitch.
